Torbay Trail Mapping Project

The TETC Mapping Project has developed a guide to hiking trails and footpaths within Torbay. This is a working inventory of existing trails and we invite people to use the maps and give us their feedback. We are also looking for any information on historical/traditional names of places, i.e. Dead Calf Ridge. All the maps are pdf files.

First, the index map sized for 11x17 paper:

Guided Hikes in Torbay

Canada Day 2001 TheTETC hosted an interpretive walk along the Father Troy Trail on Canada Day, Sunday, July 1, 2001. More than a dozen people and a few four-legged friends gathered at the beach at 2 pm. Bob Codner covered the history of the community and Ross Traverse discussed the flora. The sun even decided to join us for part of the walk to Tapper's Cove. Thanks to Bob and Ross for teaching us about Torbay's history and plant life!
Moon Pond Ridge Break Time In August 2001, we hiked over Moon Pond Ridge and had a nice mug-up. Sandeman's cider hit the spot as we sat and enjoyed the view over Torbay and Flatrock.
Path Fire We hosted an "Explore the Wetlands of Torbay" hike to Western Island Pond on Sunday, October 28, 2001. The hike was from South Pond to Western Island Pond and Ross Traverse organized the boil-up.
Trail Beamer On Sunday, November 18, 2001 about a dozen people and several pups hiked on the Father Troy Trail from Morris Avenue to the Beamer in Flatrock. At the end of our trek, we enjoyed some hot cocoa with all the fixings.
View Boil-up On Sunday, April 21, 2002 about eight people and only one dog hiked to Moon Pond Ridge in Flatrock where there is a panoramic view from the top. We were guided by Ross Traverse, who also organized the boil-up at Half Moon Pond on the way down.
South Pond Rusty Car On Sunday, May 26, 2002 we explored the South Pond wetland. We went through some backcountry trails to the airport boundary and returned via a different trail to South Pond. Unfortunately, not all the sights we saw were attractive.

On Sunday, June 23, 2002 we hiked to Jones Pond, an important wetland on the border of Torbay and Middle Cove.

Bonfire Bonfire Bonfire On Friday, August 23, 2002 we had our first 'almost' full moon hike. We met at the beach at 8 pm and about 20 people hiked to Gallow's Cove, then back to Tapper's Cove for a bonfire and ghost stories. The weather was great and the moonlight led our way on the paths.
Bonfire Bonfire Bonfire On Sunday, February 23, 2003, we had a winter hike guided by Sandy Sandeman along some winter trails in the area of Three Island Pond and Axes Pond. The hike lasted nearly 3 hours and was enjoyed by humans and dogs alike.

For more information or if you would like to lead a hike, e-mail the TETC and we'll announce it here.
