Recycling

How YOU can help.Did you know that Torbay has a large blue box outside the Town Hall for residents to deposit their beverage containers for recycling? Did you know that the money raised from recycling those containers adds up to about $2,000 per year and that money goes towards TETC projects? Lastly, did you realise that the work involved in recycling i.e collecting the containers, removing tops, sorting them, counting them and delivering them to Evergreen Recycling has largely been done by one volunteer for the past 7 years? This is an amazing feat of dedication and hard work. It's time we found more volunteers to take over this responsibility. The blue box needs emptying about every 2 weeks. It takes about 2 hours to do the sorting and counting and a bit more time ( and a truck or van) for delivery to Evergreen. If you are able to help in any way or know of someone who would like to, please contact Helen Spencer at hspencer90@hotmail.com It would be really great if we could make this into a team effort. We hope to hear from you. - Top
Recycling in Torbay
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle…RETHINK
A big part of reducing your household waste is producing less waste to begin with. Remember the fourth “R” is rethink! Keep this in mind next time you’re tempted to buy that
over-packaged take-out food or that plastic junk that you just don't need. Recycling is great, but keep in mind the importance of reducing first.
Rethinking Household Waste
While recycling is a great way to reduce your household waste, it still takes energy to produce and transport the things you use and more energy again to transport and recycle
them. The best waste management strategy is to produce less waste in the first place. The following are some tips for reducing waste in your home:
- use cloth napkins & hand towels
- use cloth/canvas shopping bags ($3 each from TETC)
- buy in bulk & use re-useable containers
- take your water in a re-useable bottle
- store leftovers in re-useable containers
- make your morning coffee at home and take it in a travel mug
- put a “no junkmail” sign on your mailbox, or recycle junkmail
- compost your organic waste / compost toilet paper rolls, egg cartons, pet hair
- re-use plastic bags in your garbage bins, for pet clean-up or return them to the store for recycling
- shop the periphery of the grocery store for healthier, less-packaged foods
- use “old-fashioned” mops, brooms, brushes and rags instead of newer disposable versions
- donate used clothes, computers, cell phones and other household items to charity
- avoid buying unhealthy, over-packaged take-out food
- keep a jug of water in your fridge instead of buying bottled water or soda pop
- avoid buying things that don’t last long or that can’t be fixed
