MINUTES

TORBAY ENVIRONMENT & TRAILS COMMITTEE MEETING

Wednesday, September 24, 2003, 7:30pm, Kinsmen Centre

Present: Shirley Thorne Peggy Manning

Madeleine Florent Kay Codner

The agenda was approved with the addition of the Pat McGrath Walk and the upcoming SAM meeting.

The minutes were approved.

3.1 Hillside Festival:

Our booth was a success raising $500 for the Gully project. Harvey kept good records of expenses so we will be better prepared next year. We have some supplies left, ie chip cartons, forks, etc. We will try to get better grills next year as some of the toutons were a bit tough.

3.2 Property Beautification Awards:

The awards night went very well. The event cost $200 with all but $79 covered by donations. Peggy pointed out that Mrs. Anstey's name was unfortunately omitted from the list of winners in the town newsletter. We will make a point of including all names in our next newsletter.

3.3 Jones Pond:

The commissioner's report is in and it recommends a 50-metre buffer around Jones Pond as well as an as yet to be determined buffer zone along the little stream coming into the pond. There will also be access to the pond.

Madeleine gave an update on the project. The new project coordinator replacing Andy Hennebury who left at the end of August, is Krista House who was our Green Team leader last summer. Work on the water control structure is being headed by Brian Carrigan.

The main focus at the moment is on the fundraising auction being organized at Bridie Molloys for November 16 to raise the funds needed to build the two outdoor classrooms for the schools. Shirley, Madeleine and Krista are meeting with Nancy Coady tomorrow to iron out the details, ie cost of tickets, entertainment, etc. We are going to try to get one of the breweries to act as sponsor.

We are looking at a silent auction but will also probably have other types of auctions/raffles such as a pyramid, door prize, etc. We need to prepare an attractive poster for the event. Gerard Dunphy has helped with this in the past and might be able to assist with this. Possible donors mentioned were Tetley Tea, Purity Factories, Brookfield Dairies, Brian Power.

Madeleine will be sending a notice to all members via email and also requesting donations of items for the auction. Tickets will be available from the schools as well as from the TETC and town office.

This item was deferred to the next meeting as Harvey was not present.

There are no community hikes planned at this time.

7. Fall Newsletter:

We are planning for our fall newsletter to come out in early December as usual. Submissions are invited from all members. We will look at this again at the next meeting at which time we will form a newsletter committee.

Madeleine referred to the news item about the innovative sewage treatment system being used by the town of Marystown using bogs which was funded by MMSB. We will ask our town to get more information about the system.

8.1 Pat McGrath Walk for Cancer:

This year's walk has raised over $2800 so far with more donations to come in. In total, the walks have raised close to $15,000 since the beginning. One of the reasons numbers were down this year may be because the bus which was supposed to bring walkers to Gallows Cove did not show up as planned.

8.2 Stewardship Association of Municipalities Meeting, Gambo, October 24 & 25:

Shirley and Mike Byrne will attend. Shirley will check if Krista could also attend. The minutes of the spring meeting are available from Shirley.

The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 29 at 7:30pm at the Kinsmen Centre.
