1.                  Introductions and Review of Agenda

Agenda approved.

1.                  Review and Approval of Minutes of Last Meeting (May 25, 2005)

The minutes of the last meeting were approved and the following updates provided:

(1) Backcountry hike: we have decided not to hold a backcountry hike as part of the Come Home Year celebrations; a hike may be organized later on in the summer or fall.

3.                  Property Beautification Awards - Update

Peggy gave an update on preparations for this year’s awards. The nominations forms are available at the town hall. The awards will be promoted in the Northeast Avalon Times and the Telegram ‘Go Guide’; Madeleine will email both papers.

Instead of soliciting prizes from local merchants this year, it was decided that we would give a compost bin to each of the four winners in addition to the tax rebate from the town and the shrub from Traverse Gardens.  The seven ‘honourable mentions’ will receive a Torbay calendar as well as each of the three judges.

A special effort is being made this year to involve businesses in property beautification. Joan and her volunteers (Sharon Tobin, Susan Boulos and Wanda Byrne) will personally approach local businesses, mainly on Torbay Road and encourage them to take extra care with their property for Come Home Year, including putting out flowers, etc.  In addition, a letter will be sent to all 150 businesses in Torbay signed by the Mayor promoting their participation in the award program.  Improvements in the litter situation around the Irving Station have already been noted since the arrival of new management.  The Post Office, as well as its various stations is an area that will need particular attention.

Joan and her committee will also contact the town with suggestions on how to spruce up some of the town’s public areas, such as the island at the beginning of Quigley’s Lane, etc.  The town has plans to make special clean-up efforts on Torbay Road. The South Pond Road area has already been cleared of litter.

3.                  Come Home Year Celebrations - Update

4.1       BBQ at Gully Gazebo

We don’t have a moose yet so will probably need to look for donations. The tickets will ask for the purchaser’s choice of meal (moose burger, hamburger or hotdog) so we will know ahead of time how much meat we will need.

Several volunteers have been lined up to help with the event. There will be a meeting one half hour before the regular Gully Project Steering Committee on July 6 to finalize plans for the BBQ. We will need a generator if we decide to have electric lights or use kerosene lights.

4.2       Full Moon Hike/Father Troy Trail

The hike will begin at 8pm at the Beach. Tina has offered help from the Recreation Department staff. Some lights will be needed. Madeleine will be contacting the Heritage Committee to get help with the stories and contact will also be made with the MUN Folklore Department.

4.3       Hillside Festival

The Women’s Institute is on board again this year. Harvey and Mike are checking on salt fish; we will need 50lbs. A tent has been reserved . There will be a meeting on July 25 to finalize plans for our booth.  The Green Team will be on hand with displays and handouts.

4.4       TETC Calendar

Anyone interested in helping sell the calendars should contact Madeleine or Shirley.  We will be placing ads in the Northeast Avalon Times, the Come Home Year Program and the Downhomer. Shirley and Madeleine will be looking at events where we could promote the sale of the calendars.

3.                  Composting Program/MMSB Application Status

Mike will check on the status of our proposal with regard to the re-usable cloth grocery bags.  Interest in the compost bins is very high and many residents have already prepaid.

3.                  Concept and Operations Plan for the Gully

We have received $7600 from the Department of Municipal and Rural Affairs to prepare this plan. Two consultation sessions are planned for July 12 and August 17, from 7:30-9:30pm.  Krista will send an email to Bob Codner inviting Council’s participation. Invitations will be sent to all landowners and stakeholders.

3.                  Other Businesses

7.1       Publicity

Members of the Gully Project will be taking Mary Smyth and Fred Hollinghurst on a tour of the Gully on Saturday as they plan to do an article for the Telegram.

7.2       Trail Project

Harvey gave an update on the trail project. There has basically been little development since last

fall. The data bank with 50 overlays is ready and available to the town. With the information stored in the bank, we could easily develop a brochure/map but not a virtual tour.  Some updating is needed using the newest aerial photographs.

Harvey met with Corrie to discuss the transfer of the bank from MUN to the town. This will require some funding to acquire the necessary software and for for staff to get proper training, probably in the order of $5-8,000. The town is very interested in acquiring the bank but will need someone on hand who can operate the software. Anyone interested in volunteering on this endeavour should contact Harvey.

7.3       Landscaping at the Gully Gazebo

We are looking for volunteers to help complete levelling of the gravel at the Gully Gazebo.  Volunteers are asked to ‘bring their own rakes and gloves’ and to meet at the Gazebo between 10-10:30pm on Saturday.  Harvey and some students have already made a start. The gravel has been provided by the town.

Harvey is getting quotes on the cost of laying sod around the Gazebo as opposed to using seeds.

It was suggested that we should avail of discounted items from Traverse Gardens at the end of the season to improve the area around the Gazebo.

7.4       Web Site

Madeleine will send Michelle some updates to be included on the TETC web site.

7.5       New Environmental Science Textbook

Madeleine informed the committee that the Gully Project is featured as a case study in the new environmental science textbook to be used in high schools across the province.

3.                  Date of Next Meeting and Adjournment

The next TETC get-together will be the Property Beautification Awards night to be held on August 24 at 7pm.
